Search Bronx County Inmate Records

Bronx County inmate records are searched through the city jail system because Bronx arrests that lead to local jail custody are handled by New York City corrections, not a separate county jail. A Bronx County jail roster search starts with the online custody lookup, then moves to phone, court, records-request, state prison, federal, or immigration channels when a name does not appear. The right path depends on whether the person is still in police processing, has been committed to city jail, has moved to state prison, or is held by a federal or immigration agency.

Bronx County DOC Lookup

The official Bronx County inmate records path is the NYC DOC Person in Custody Lookup. The related DOC lookup landing page says the tool finds the current location of a person in Department of Correction custody and provides basic case information. For Bronx County, that means people committed by a court to NYC DOC after arraignment, remand, or a bail decision. It does not cover someone still in an NYPD precinct, a person transferred to New York State prison, a federal defendant held by the Bureau of Prisons, or a person in ICE custody.

Bronx County does not have the kind of sheriff-run online jail roster used in many counties outside New York City. New York Correction Law treats local jail duties in New York City as commissioner of correction duties, so the city DOC lookup is the practical roster for Bronx Criminal Court and Bronx Supreme Court criminal commitments. No official Bronx County sheriff or NYC DOC mobile app with an inmate roster was located; use the NYC DOC web lookup, VINE hotline, WebCriminal, DOCCS, BOP, and ICE locators instead.

The DOC portal should be treated as a current-custody lookup, not as a full archive. The research source did not locate an official refresh interval or a rule saying released people remain listed for a fixed number of hours. If a recent arrest is missing, the person may still be in police processing, may have been released before DOC commitment, or may not yet have a completed DOC custody record.

Bronx County DOC Screen

The official NYC DOC Person in Custody Lookup portal shows two main search paths: a single identifier field for NYSID or Book and Case Number, and a name path using first and last name.

Bronx County inmate records search in the NYC DOC Person in Custody Lookup

The screenshot matters because it shows the limits of the lookup. There is no visible date-of-birth field on the inspected public form, and the identifier path is meant for an exact NYSID or Book and Case Number. When names are common, DOC money instructions say a listing may appear so the correct person can be selected before using the person page.

Find Bronx County Inmates

How do I find someone in the Bronx County jail? Start with the city DOC lookup when the person has already gone through arraignment and a court has ordered jail custody. Use a unique identifier if possible. The Book and Case Number is especially useful because DOC also requires it for deposits into a person-in-custody account.

  1. Open the DOC Person in Custody Lookup directly, or reach it from the official DOC inmate information page.
  2. Enter the NYSID or Book and Case Number by itself when that identifier is known. This avoids same-name results.
  3. If only a name is known, enter the first name and last name. The public form reviewed did not show a DOB field, so do not rely on DOB as a visible filter.
  4. Click Search and review any matching names. DOC instructions indicate that same-name results may require selecting a person from a list.
  5. Open the person page for current location, basic case information, and any available money-transfer control.
  6. If there is no match, check VINE, WebCriminal, OpenRecords, DOCCS, BOP, or ICE based on the custody path.

Note: A person missing from DOC lookup is not proof of release; custody may still be with police, state, federal, or immigration authorities.

Bronx County Search Fields

The DOC roster search is narrow by design. It does not ask for borough of arrest, court part, arrest date, facility, or charge category. That can be frustrating for Bronx County searches, but it also explains why NYSID and Book and Case Number are the best inputs when available from court paperwork, a bail receipt, a prior record, or a family contact.

What does a roster record show? The official DOC text confirms current location and basic case information. The public pages reviewed did not support opening and republishing a live person profile, so the field inventory is limited to official instructions and page text. Formal charges, next court appearances, and case status should be confirmed through WebCriminal or the court system, because jail custody data and criminal court data serve different purposes.

Charges or bailBasic case details may appear, but WebCriminal and court records are the better source for charge status and future dates.

Bronx County Backup Searches

A Bronx County inmate records search often requires more than one system. A person can pass from police processing to arraignment, then to DOC custody, release, state prison, federal detention, or immigration custody. Each stage has a different public access channel, and one database usually cannot confirm another agency's status.

For police custody before DOC commitment, the DOC lookup will not help. NYPD arrest-record requests are handled through NYPD FOIL guidance and NYC OpenRecords. For older records, records not visible online, or records involving multiple agencies, include every known identifier and avoid asking for a broad name-only search when more precise facts are available.

Bronx County Custody Comparison

County jail, state prison, federal custody, and immigration custody are separate systems. Bronx County defendants who are still pretrial or serving a local sentence of one year or less are usually in NYC DOC custody. Sentenced felony defendants normally move to New York State DOCCS, often outside Bronx County. Federal defendants may be in BOP or U.S. Marshals custody, and immigration detainees are searched through ICE ODLS.

No active DOCCS prison, BOP facility, or dedicated ICE detention center was located physically in Bronx County in the official sources reviewed. That does not mean a Bronx County case cannot move into those systems. It means the correct search tool changes after transfer or federal or immigration involvement.

Bronx County Booking Pathway

The Bronx arrest-to-DOC path begins with NYPD or another law-enforcement agency. Police processing and central booking happen before DOC custody, so a person at that stage will not appear in the DOC person-in-custody lookup. After Criminal Court arraignment, the court decides whether the person is released on recognizance, released with non-monetary conditions, held on bail where allowed, or remanded. Remand means the court orders custody without bail.

DOC commitment begins after the court orders the person into city jail custody. Intake includes identity confirmation, property handling, medical and mental-health screening, classification, housing assignment, and creation or update of the DOC custody record. Classification is the jail's internal process for deciding housing, supervision, and medical or safety needs. The public record may become searchable after DOC custody is established, but no official update interval was found in the source material.

Bronx County inmate records can also change quickly after arraignment. A person may post bail, be released after a later hearing, be moved from one Rikers command to another, be assigned to an infirmary command, or become state-ready after sentencing. Confirm current location before travel, money deposits, or package delivery.

Bronx County Jail Facilities

Bronx County jail custody is served by NYC DOC's citywide jail network. Rikers Island is addressed through East Elmhurst, Queens, but it holds people committed by courts in all five boroughs, including Bronx County. Bellevue Hospital Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units is a hospital-based DOC custody setting for people with complex medical needs. Facility pages and contact cards should be used as location aids only, because the citywide DOC lookup, not a facility-specific roster, confirms where a person is held.

Bronx County Visit Rules

DOC visiting rules apply across the Rikers commands that serve Bronx County defendants. All regular visits are one hour. Schedule eligibility is based on the first letter of the incarcerated person's last name, so visitors should check the current DOC visit schedule before going to the Benjamin Ward Visit Center. Friday televisits must be requested in advance through DOC's televisit process, and a visit is not confirmed until the visitor receives an email with the date, time, and access link.

Complaints about attorney visit delays route to the Office of Constituent and Grievance Services through the DOC general number during normal business hours.

Bronx County Money Mail

After a Bronx County inmate record confirms DOC custody, money and mail must follow DOC rules. People in custody cannot keep cash; DOC treats cash as contraband, and visitors who give cash directly to a person in custody can be subject to arrest. Packages can be delivered at the Bail and Package Reception area next to Central Visits on Rikers Island during in-person visiting hours or sent by mail if the item is allowed under DOC's mail and package rules.

Bronx County Records Terms

VINE and FOIL fill gaps left by the live DOC lookup. VINE is a 24-hour custody and release notification hotline for NYC DOC custody, but DOC says it does not monitor police lockups, federal detention, state prisons, or juvenile detention centers. FOIL is New York's Freedom of Information Law request process. For a Bronx arrest record or older custody material, a request through NYC OpenRecords should name the agency, the person, the DOB if known, NYSID, Book and Case Number, arrest date, precinct, and court docket if known.

NYSID
A New York State identification number used across criminal justice records.
Book and Case Number
An NYC DOC custody and case identifier used for lookup and deposits.
State-ready
A sentenced person waiting in local jail for transfer to DOCCS state prison custody.
Detainer
A request or hold from another agency, such as immigration or federal authorities.
VINE
Victim Information and Notification Everyday, used for custody and release notifications.

For state prison notifications, DOCCS points victims to VINE at 1-888-VINE-4-NY and Option 2 for state correctional facility notifications. For federal or immigration custody, the BOP locator and ICE ODLS are the better starting points. For court charges and future court dates after a Bronx arrest, use WebCriminal rather than the DOC housing lookup.
